IHGS Diploma in Genealogy - Progress

Diploma in Genealogy 2014 - Progress

The three Diploma in Genealogy candidates have made steady progress. Each has identified the elements to their portfolio work and made inroads to the assigned task set by the Principal of the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies.

We have met twice since the introductory session, the first to identify the portfolio elements and to ensure that each student will be able to demonstrate experience across a wide-range of record sources. We also looked at the key elements to a client's report. The most recent session provided the students with the opportunity to view an example of a portfolio submission and to discuss ways and means to present the finished work.
After the Christmas break we will meet to discuss further progress and to address any issues or concerns before turning our attention to the archives. In the classroom we will discuss a wide-range of published works, indexes and websites and then visit the Hampshire Records Office, the Portsmouth History Centre and the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies to conduct 'library tests.' I shall sit back and watch as they frantically thumb their way through countless books, searching for the answers to the questions I have posed, whilst keeping one eye on the time!
I am quite looking forward to it.
